Dear Readers
We are introducing a new issue of the Journal of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy which presents scientific articles of the participants of the 11th International scientific and practical conference “Modern Metallurgy of the Beginning of the New Millennium”. The conference was held on November 18-21, 2014 at the Lipetsk State Technical University (Russia) and coincided with the 80th anniversary of Novolipetsk Steel.
More than 160 participants represented the leading Russian and foreign partner universities of higher technical education (Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas, MISIS, Bauman MSTU, Ural Federal University named after the first President of Russia B. N. Yeltsin, MAMI, Nosov Magnitogorsk State Technical University, Moscow State University of Technology “STANKIN”, National Mineral Resources University (University of Mines), Karaganda State Industrial University (Kazakhstan), TU Bergakademie Freiberg (Germany)), as well as Russian industrial companies and global manufacturers of metallurgical equipment, such as Siemens VAI (Austria), SMS Siemag AG (Germany), etc.
Discussions during the conference highlighted the practice-oriented training of highly skilled personnel in the “university-production”system, scientific aspects in resource economy, modern control systems for metallurgical processes and technologies, industrial and ecological safety, technologies of cast iron, steel and hot- and cold-rolled stock manufacturing. This meeting of scientists has once again confirmed the main aim of the Lipetsk State Technical University - training highly skilled personnel possessing profound fundamental and innovative knowledge, able to make a significant contribution to the development of the Russian and regional industry and science.
The Lipetsk State Technical University is one of the leading institutions of higher education of the Central Black Earth region of the Russian Federation. Its history began in 1956 and is closely connected with the development of Lipetsk as a new industrial center with a dynamically increasing industrial potential. The innovative and industrial orientation of the Lipetsk region positions the university as an institution for training professionals who guarantee the economic growth and modernization of the metallurgical, machine-building, construction clusters, as well as energy and economy.
The scientific and educational structure of the university includes the institute of metallurgy, the institute of technical engineering, the research institute, as well as six faculties: the faculty of physics and technology, the transport engineering faculty, the faculty of construction engineering, the faculty of automation and information science, the faculty of economics, the faculty of humanities and social studies, the extramural faculty.
The university’s long-term strategic partner has been Novolipetsk Steel - NLMK, which is the world’s largest metallurgical company. NLMK is a vertically-integrated group of companies operating in 39 regions of Russia and the world, with its main production facilities concentrated in the Lipetsk region, making it the primary employer of the region. The partnership between the university and NLMK develops in different directions. The priority issues are training professionals for NLMK and scientific research in metallurgy. The results of the latter are presented in the articles in this journal.
This issue of the journal is published with the support from the Rector of the University of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy (UCTM-Sofia), Professor Dr. Mitko Georgiev, and the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy, Professor Dr. Bogdana Koumanova, whom I sincerely thank with the hope for further cooperation.
I wish all the readers of the journal new scientific achievements and the realization of their plans and projects.
